The 2026 Book Publishing Cost Report

We harvested 1162 real search queries about book publishing to find out what authors actually want to know. One finding dominated everything else: they want to know what it costs.

21.6%
of all publishing searches are about price
23.9%
are phrased as questions, not purchases

The headline findings

Everything below comes from queries people actually typed into Google — not a panel, not a guess.

21.6%
of all book-publishing searches are about price
251 of 1,162 harvested queries contain a cost, price or affordability term. Cost isn't a late-stage question in this market — it's the entry point.
#1
cost question is about ghostwriting, not publishing
"how much does it cost to hire a ghostwriter" is the highest-demand cost query in the set. The expensive part is the writing, and buyers know it.

The rest of the findings

23.9%
of searches are phrased as questions
278 queries start with how/what/where/why. This is an information-first market: people research long before they buy.
42%
of cost anxiety sits in self-publishing
106 of the 251 cost queries cluster around self-publishing — more than every other category combined. First-time authors are the most price-uncertain.
48
queries look for a local publisher
"near me" searches persist even though publishing is entirely remote — buyers still want someone accountable and reachable.

Read: self-publishing generates more price anxiety than every other category combined. First-time authors are flying blind on cost — which is exactly why so much of the industry stays vague about it.

What each service really costs

Typical market ranges across the industry. These are ranges, not our prices — our own published pricing is in the next section.

ServiceTypical range
Professional cover design
Custom illustrated covers sit at the top of this range.
$300 – $1,500
Developmental editing
Usually priced per word; the deepest and most expensive edit.
$1,000 – $5,000
Copy editing / proofreading
Scales with manuscript length.
$400 – $2,000
Interior formatting
Print and ebook layouts are often quoted separately elsewhere.
$150 – $800
Ghostwriting (full book)
The single largest cost, and the widest range in the industry.
$5,000 – $35,000
Audiobook production
Priced by finished hour of audio.
$1,200 – $3,500
Book marketing / launch
Ad spend is usually additional.
$500 – $5,000

Add these up à la carte and a professionally published book lands somewhere between $2,000 and $10,000+ — before any ghostwriting. That gap between the cheapest and most expensive path is the single biggest source of confusion in this market.

Methodology

Demand data. 1162 unique search queries harvested from Google Autocomplete in July 2026, seeded from book-publishing topics and expanded with alphabet-soup and intent modifiers. Queries were de-duplicated, clustered by topic, and classified as cost-related if they contained a cost, price, affordability or "how much" term. This measures what people search, which is a proxy for demand — it is not a volume estimate and we don't present it as one.

Price data. The Zeal package prices are our real published prices, identical to those quoted on every service page.

Market ranges. Typical industry ranges, presented as ranges. We did not survey authors or publishers, and nothing here should be read as a survey finding.
